The knitting machine was invented near Nottingham in 1589 and its popularisation led to the Luddite Rebellion in 1811 (Merchant, Blood in the Machine.). It has undergone many transformations, from a worker's menace, to a house-wife’s helper, to an artist’s tool. This publication explores the machines connections to revoltion, violence and cybernetics. It's an investigation into an overlooked & vaguely obsolete tool, trying to understand it's complex past. This publication also includes conversations with contemporary artists/craftspeople working with the machine, figuring out how the knitting machine fits into the the future of art & labor.
